What is breast lift surgery?

Some people may be satisfied with their breast size but not with the saggy appearance caused by natural aging, dramatic weight loss, after-effects of pregnancy and breastfeeding, or genetics. Mild to moderate breast asymmetry can create a lopsided look, as well as make it difficult to shop for undergarments, shirts, or swimsuits that fit the upper body properly. With breast lift surgery in Delhi at Aestiva Clinic, one can restore the attractively small and well-shaped, fuller breasts without any change in breast size.

A breast lift is a major surgical procedure that is designed to uplift and/or reshapes the breasts which hang low over the chest and their maximum volume is at their base. This surgery is ideal for people who want to create a more natural-looking body figure and a more balanced silhouette as it can correct the symmetry of both breasts in terms of their shape, size, or areola and nipple positioning.

Mastopexy can either be done alone or in combination with other cosmetic breast surgery called breast augmentation to ensure the best-desired look. This can be discussed at an initial consultation with the surgeon. Breast lift surgery aims to give a slightly over-correction of breasts so that after the swelling subsides, the breasts appear naturally positioned and in proportion to the rest of the chest and body. What does it involve?

It is a daycare procedure that takes about 1-2 hours. During the surgery, the blood supply is kept preserved so that the breasts post-surgery remain full-functioning and proportionate. Generally, there are several techniques employed in the surgery based on the location of the incision to provide the patient with desired lift. There are various incision patterns possible such as:
    • Circular (Donut or Benelli lift) or periareolar incision- It is around the nipple, i.e. the outline of the areola
    • Vertical (lollipop shape)- Around the external side of the areola where it meets the breast skin and then goes vertically downwards towards the breast fold.
    • Wide (anchor shape)- It includes the same incisions as in vertical lift along with one horizontal cut made at the breast crease. This is done for large and more pendulous breasts.

The surgery involves the following basic steps:
    1. Making of an incision in or around the breasts.
    2. The excision of surplus sagging tissues or skin of the breasts.
    3. Reshaping and relocating the breast mold and nipple, thereby giving a lifted appearance. The remaining breast tissues are secured in place with the help of sutures.
    4. Closing of incisions with absorbable sutures and the covering of surgical area with bandages that are kept for 10-14 days.

Pre-operative preparations:
    • The patient must be in good health which can be checked by a physical examination and routine lab tests by a general physician.
    • Make preparations at home for recovery as well as arrange transport for going back home after surgery.
    • Avoid intake of aspirin or related medications for 2 weeks before and after surgery.
    • Ensure that the patient is in the best nutritional state including an adequate supply of vitamin supplements (especially Vitamin C).

Result and recovery:

The patient can notice visible results immediately after the surgery but final results can be seen after 6-9 months. Initially, the breasts feel slightly taut and firm. There might be soreness, pain, or swelling felt around the incisions for the first few days that can be relieved by some over-the-counter painkillers.
Soon after the surgery, the treated area is installed with drainage tubes at each incision site for the removal of any accumulated body fluids. The operated person can return home after a night stay or on the same day if everything is well.

Full recovery usually takes 6-8 weeks. During the recovery period, the patient is recommended to take some time off work and reduce physical movement. Bending, lifting weights, straining, or exerting pressure over the operated breasts during sex or sleep must be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Sports bras that provide support to breasts must be worn for 8 weeks and tightly fitted garments must be avoided. Driving is only permitted after 2 weeks of rest and the person can take a full body shower after a week.
